Preventative and reactive injection moulding tool maintenance
Tool Maintenance Technician
Location: South Leicestershire Salary: Up to £35,000 per annum Job Type: Permanent, Full-time
The Opportunity
We're recruiting a practical, hands-on Tool Maintenance Technician to join an established and successful manufacturing business in South Leicestershire.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in injection mould tooling, toolmaking or mechanical maintenance who enjoys working with precision equipment and solving engineering problems.
You'll take ownership of the day-to-day servicing, maintenance and repair of injection mould tools, ensuring they're kept in excellent working condition and ready for production.
The role offers plenty of variety, a well-established engineering environment and the opportunity to develop your technical skills while making a real difference to production efficiency.
What You'll Be Doing
Carrying out planned preventative maintenance on plastic injection mould tools.
Stripping, cleaning, inspecting, servicing and rebuilding mould tools and components.
Identifying wear, damage and potential faults before they affect production.
Undertaking routine repairs and replacing worn or damaged tooling components.
Maintaining and preparing bolsters, inserts and associated tooling for production.
Manufacturing replacement components using workshop machinery and equipment.
Supporting reactive maintenance and troubleshooting tooling problems.
Working closely with production and toolroom colleagues to minimise downtime.
Recording maintenance activities and helping develop effective preventative maintenance schedules based on tool usage.
Identifying recurring problems and suggesting practical improvements.
Maintaining high standards of workmanship, housekeeping and health and safety.
What We're Looking For
We're particularly interested in candidates who enjoy practical engineering work and have a good understanding of how precision tooling operates.
Essential Experience and Skills
Experience maintaining, servicing or working with injection mould tools or similar mechanical tooling.
Good mechanical fitting, assembly and fault-finding skills.
Ability to strip, inspect and accurately rebuild tooling.
Understanding of injection mould construction, components and common wear issues.
Competence using workshop equipment and hand tools.
Basic machining and surface grinding skills.
Ability to identify wear, damage and potential tooling problems.
A methodical approach to maintenance and problem-solving.
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
Desirable Experience
A background in toolmaking, mechanical engineering or plastic injection moulding.
Experience maintaining bolsters, inserts and mould components.
CNC milling or conventional machining experience.
Familiarity with CAD/CAM or EDM (wire or spark erosion).
Experience with planned preventative maintenance systems.
Experience using precision measuring equipment.
Experience recording maintenance activities within a manufacturing or production system.
You don't need to tick every box on the desirable list.** We're equally interested in candidates with strong practical engineering skills who are keen to develop their tooling expertise.
About You
You'll be someone who takes pride in doing a job properly, enjoys understanding how things work and is proactive about preventing problems rather than simply reacting to them.
You'll be organised, reliable and comfortable working both independently and alongside production and engineering colleagues.
Above all, we're looking for someone with **good mechanical skills, attention to detail and a genuine interest in precision engineering.**
Why Consider This Role?
Salary up to £35,000, depending on experience.
Permanent position with an established manufacturing business.
Varied, hands-on engineering work rather than repetitive production duties.
Opportunity to take ownership of preventative tool maintenance.
Work alongside experienced engineering and toolmaking colleagues.
Scope to develop additional machining and tooling skills.
A role where your contribution directly improves equipment reliability and production performance.

If you have experience in tool maintenance, toolmaking or precision mechanical engineering and are looking for a stable, hands-on role in South Leicestershire, we'd be pleased to hear from you.
